LESHKA HE PROJECT ( 2X42 MW)

Situated in the Amlarem
Block of the Jaintia Hills
District, Meghalaya is the river Myntdu which is the source of
water for the Leshka HE Project. This river flows south towards
Bangladesh. The Myntdu Leshka HE Project is a Run-of-River Scheme on the
River Myntdu, a Project undertaken by the Meghalaya State Electricity
Board( MeSEB).

The
Background : The investigation works of the Myntdu Leshka
H.E.project ( 2*42 MW) located was taken up by the Board during 1975-76
and the final Revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) was submitted to the
Central Electricity Authority ( CEA) for clearance in October 1998.
The public hearing for Environmental Clearance conducted by the
Meghalaya Pollution Control Board (MPCB) was held in March 1999. The public
welcomed the project.
Necessary Site Clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (
MOEF) to take up the Pre-Construction works of the Project was given in
August 1999. The Techno-Economic Clearance ( TEC) was issued by the CEA on
20th September 1999. The necessary Forest Clearance, subject to certain
conditions has been accorded by the MOEF vide their letter No.8-33/2000-FC
dt. 19.6.2001. The MOEF accorded Environmental Clearance on 29th
September, 2001.
The Project was cleared by the CEA, Government of India in September
1999 Ref letter No. 2/Meg/2/99-PAC/9499-9522/702 Dt. 20th September, 1999
and was accorded Environment Clearance as per the provision of
Environmental Impact Assessment vide Notification Ref No.
J-12011/4/99-1A-1 dt. 20.9.2001.
During the investigation works of Myntdu river, the implementation
authority took special care to ensure that this project had the
least impact on environment and that there will be no displacement of
villages.

The Main Components: of
the project include the 59 metres high Leshka Dam, located on Myntdu
river, 100 metres downstream of Leshka, the tri-junction of Umshakian,
Myntdu, and Lamu rivers at longitude 92-15 E and latitude 25-10 N The
stored water is conducted through a 4km long water conductor system,
comprising of a tunnel, surge shaft, high pressure tunnel and
penstock pipes to the power house on the river bank of Lynriang river,
housing 2 machines of 42 MW each.

Date of
Starting of the construction works:
of the project ( Zero
date)- the Board had on 5.10.2001 approved to fix 11.1.2001 as the zero
date for the project.
On Completion:
the
Project would generate 372.69 MU of Electricity annually. The estimated
cost of the Project at 1999 price level is 285.36 crore excluding interest
during construction.
