         ORCHARDS

In this district upland areas have been cultivated since the ancient times. While highlands are used for betelnut or pan cultivation or as an orchard. These orchards are famous mostly for pineapples, Oranges, limes, lemons, peaches, papayas, bananas, plums etc. There is wide market for all these commodities in the entire North East. In addition the Agri-horti depts. of the State have also set-up a factory In Shillong, Risa Colony to use local products for the manufacture of Fruit Juices, Pickles, Jams and other preserved fruit drinks. In addition, the Ministry at the center has provided assistance to the State to enhance the dry food processing industries in the North East.

The Japanese Mechanized farming system ( for more information on this system: refer to the Article by S.Priyadarshini published in the " Jaintia Hills - A Meghalaya Tribe" Book ) in slopeland orchards will definitely boost these industries. Infact the same mechanized method can be welcomed in this district for better production.
