Art  &  Culture  of  the Jaintias             

The Jaintias are known   for their rich art and culture. Hand woven traditional costumes worn during dances and festivals will draw anybody's attention and earn appreciation.

Cane, bamboo and wood are used for carving and engraving of various designs of craftworks. Pestles and mortars for pounding rice, handles for knives, daos, spate, hoes, canoes, baskets, trays, mats, sunshades, rain shades, containers and other articles are made by the Jaintias.

 

At Larnai village, earthen pots known as Kchu larnai are made without the potter's wheel. Lac or red resin dye is also important like that of pottery industry of the Northern Jaintia Hills.

 

The Jaintia music and dance is very rich accompanied by different musical instruments such as bhuri ( a clarionet like flute), bom (big drum), flute (ka chawiang) and others.
